Miles per gallon

Miles per gallon (mpg) is the US customary measure of fuel economy, expressing how many miles a vehicle can travel on one US gallon (3.785 L) of fuel. Higher values indicate greater efficiency. It is the official fuel economy standard in the United States and is published on all new vehicle window stickers (Monroney labels) under EPA ratings. To convert US mpg to litres per 100 km, divide 235.215 by the mpg value — so 30 mpg equals approximately 7.84 L/100km. US mpg should not be confused with UK mpg, which uses the larger imperial gallon and produces higher numbers for the same vehicle.

Kilometers per liter

Kilometres per litre (km/L) is the metric efficiency-based fuel economy measure used primarily in Japan, India, Latin America, and parts of Asia. Like mpg, higher values indicate greater efficiency — it is the metric analogue of miles per gallon. One km/L equals approximately 2.825 mpg (US) and is inversely related to L/100km: km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km. A Japanese kei car rated at 20 km/L achieves approximately 47 US mpg or 5 L/100km. The km/L unit is used in Japanese JC08 and WLTC fuel economy certification cycles.
