Liters per 100 kilometers

Litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) is the standard fuel consumption measure in Europe, Australia, Canada, and most of the world outside the US. Unlike mpg, it measures consumption rather than range — lower values mean greater efficiency. Standard atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa. To convert US mpg to L/100km, divide 235.215 by the mpg value. L/100km cannot be converted to mpg by simple multiplication because the relationship is inverse: L/100km = 235.215 / mpg (US) or 282.481 / mpg (UK). A fuel-efficient modern car achieves 4–6 L/100km; a large SUV typically consumes 9–14 L/100km.

Miles per gallon

Miles per gallon (mpg) is the US customary measure of fuel economy, expressing how many miles a vehicle can travel on one US gallon (3.785 L) of fuel. Higher values indicate greater efficiency. It is the official fuel economy standard in the United States and is published on all new vehicle window stickers (Monroney labels) under EPA ratings. To convert US mpg to litres per 100 km, divide 235.215 by the mpg value — so 30 mpg equals approximately 7.84 L/100km. US mpg should not be confused with UK mpg, which uses the larger imperial gallon and produces higher numbers for the same vehicle.
