Length
Length is one of the seven base quantities in the International System of Units (SI), defined as the measurement of distance between two points in space. The SI base unit for length is the metre (m), formally defined since 1983 as the distance light travels in a vacuum in exactly 1/299,792,458 of a second — linking length irrevocably to the speed of light.
Throughout history, length measurement systems reflected local customs and human anatomy: the inch derived from the width of a thumb, the foot from the length of a human foot, and the cubit from the distance between the elbow and the tip of the middle finger. The metric system, introduced during the French Revolution in 1795, sought to replace these arbitrary standards with a universal, decimal-based framework. Today, the metric system is the official measurement standard in every country except the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia.
In physics and engineering, precise length conversion is critical. A unit error in aerospace calculations, for example, contributed to the loss of NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter in 1999, when one engineering team used imperial units while another used metric. Understanding the relationship between units — and converting accurately between them — is a fundamental skill in science, engineering, architecture, and everyday life.
